Camera work definitions
Composition and framing -
- Composition : Where objects are placed or arranged in a shot e.g: props
- Framing : When you chose what to include in a shot and what you leave out. What you leave out can be important e.g: in a thriller a shot might leave out objects/people to create tension and mystery.
Extreme long shot: the subject isn't clearly seen but the shot shows the environment of which the scene is to start etc...
Long shot: the subject takes up most of the frame so you can see a slight boarder around the head and feet or the subject.
Mid-shot: this is to show the mid section up to the head of the subject to see how the subject feels.
Close up: this is a shot on either a face, part of the body or an object to show detail or emotions. The viewer feels like they are in the subjects personal space and shares their feelings.
Over the shoulder shot: this shot is used to show the reactions etc... in a conversations.
Editing
- Continuity editing: this type of editing maintains the flow in the film while calls the attention of the audience to specific objects, characters or events in a film. it allows the film to shift through the time and gives a film rhythm and shows action and reaction.
- Fade to black/white: this is where a shot fades in or out to either black or white to create a sense of passing time or flashbacks if it is done quickly.
- Jump cut: an abrupt cut between shots to create the effect of drama, can begin/end action. if done badly can look poor.
