Analyzing two film clips
Clip one - Terminator 1, 1984, James Cameron. Clip two - Sixth sense, 1999, M-night
Shymalan.
Clip one (1.30 – 3.30, tech noir scene) – Sarah Connor, Kyle Reese and John Connor, mid shot of Arnold walking towards Sarah, see his face and when he does things, slow down when he walks for dramatic effect, music goes quiet as well and more music is played over it to both set the scene and mood then background music stops as he walks to Sarah and the action starts, red in the gun for blood passion love seduction hate anger etc. Cage in front as protected and then he walks around it which shows nothing can stop him. Camera tracks and pans away from him as he walks so he is like coming into your space making you uncomfortable and scared. As getting closer is gets tense and quieter. Blanks everyone else and concentrates on the women, slow motion = gives the feel of her t have a chance to run. Kyle Reese sat at bar seen through the bottles. He sticks out from the rest of the people because of clothes so hard to miss him. Close up of her looking around. Red line symbolizing death etc. High mid shot of Arnold looking down at women to make her seem small and defenceless. Sarah’s point of view and she sees the red light. The lyrics ‘you’re got me burning, don’t let me go im your prisoner’ = represents what the women is to him. Tight fitted clothing, bright colours but not him, leopard print = danger, predator, and red skirt shows blood etc. on the dancer may show the way he is. He looks and she ducks down to let him not see her, doesn’t mean to do that. Music and red line makes him like a machine. The lighting is dim and has to filter through smoke as it’s a disco but these elements make the scene more realistic.
(THE CLIP ABOVE IS ONLY PART OF THE SCENE)
Clip two – The Scared little boy (Cole) and his mother’s reaction makes the boy not want to tell her but then does. Shot of a dead women that only he can see is creepy and the mentioning of grandma shocks the mother as the boy talks about her. The emotions make the scene more intense and makes the audience feel the same way as it involves them. Mother starts believing him when he says things that he shouldn't know but the grandmother would. Boy is traumatized He can really see her and you can because of his reaction and what he is saying. So nervous to tell his mum. Speaks quiet and has strange language.
Shots, mise-en-scene, plot etc... : voice over, tracking to her car, zooms in and around to her window, mid shot of the mum and boy as focuses on the boy as his expression, scared, nervous, eyes= golden mean, mum is focused on accident he is focused on the mum, background noise to make realistic, two shot, conversation is a big deal as it could make him look mental or lying he has never told her and he wants her to understand as he is so young and scared this creates tension and suspense, the camera now goes into the car, there would typically be some music but there is nothing which is strange, the camera now does a reverse shot between the two characters, no music because there is no panic as she doesn’t believe him, close up shot to see her reaction, she wants to listen to him, scene is very conventional= typical mum and son, environment. When it closes up on the mother she looks out the window as if to make sure because she wants him normal, close up of the boys scared face and the dead women behind him as its from his point of view so the audience believes him, makes you feel uncomfortable, unconventional as his mums point of view as she can’t see her and the boy is in the shot and so is the women though the mum can’t see her makes you feel uncomfortable, zooms in on him to a close up to see him talking, all diegetic music is normal and natural no edited in music or sound, close up of mum panicking, normal accident scene but the weirdest conversation, massive contrast between normal life and the conversation, it’s distressing for the boy to see the dead, the sense of no music shows the seriousness of the scene, straight cut between the two and its slow, you’re supposed to feel upset, unconventional to have no music etc. when mentioning the grandma, close up of mothers reaction you can see panic in her eyes as doesn’t want to hear it but it changes as he says about the grandmother seeing her dance, trying to convince herself that he is just a regular child until he says about the grandmother, every time he pauses it cuts back to the mother, the mother is upset and distressed, mother is crying and chocked up and that he isn’t lying now. – This film is a psychological thriller.
